Recordings

Making recordings can be such a difficult thing. I’ve made a few and I’ve never been completely satisfied with my results.

Once in a while, though, I wonder what some artists are thinking. I’m listening to one of the most beautiful masses ever written (Rheinberger) being performed in such a straight forward manner that I would think it was a very modern piece. There is no rubato, no soul, no gesture anywhere to be found. And it’s one of the best choirs in the world. The execution is fantastic, but it’s musical content is so boring it’s hard to fathom. I don’t understand how on earth they came to this incredibly plastic interpretation.
